Persefoni vs Watershed
October 31, 2025
Persefoni and Watershed are both American enterprise SaaS platforms for carbon accounting and ESG reporting, basing on standards such as the GHG Protocol. Both include climate and environmental databases (such as emissions data) and data automation tools.
But Persefoni (founded in 2020) positions itself as an "ERP for carbon," attempting to integrate CO2 emissions data management into the enterprise core operations. The platform emphasizes the use of AI, for example, AI is used for automatic data matching, anomaly detection, emission factor recommendations and more. Persefoni is actively expanding its support for reporting standards (Scope 3, SB 253, CSRD, ISSB, etc.) in various jurisdictions.
Watershed (2019), in addition to accounting and reporting tools, includes a marketplace for carbon removal and clean energy projects, helping clients invest in green projects. Watershed also includes a "granular and auditable" climate dataset and supply chain software integrations. Watershed's clients include major brands and financial institutions (Airbnb, FedEx, Visa and others). The company has an ambitious goal of engaging clients to reduce or remove 500 megatons of CO₂ equivalent (approximately 1% of global annual emissions) by 2030.
